Located near the vibrant corner of Ma May and Hang Chinh Streets in the heart of Hanoi's Old Quarter, the Viet Fun Hotel will appeal to those for whom size matters almost as much as money. You'd normally pay much more for rooms this size, and the enthusiastic service and helpful advice ensure it is, well, fun.

These come with wooden floors, a small balcony, a double and a single bed, kitsch furniture and artwork (look for the pair of cutesy, gold-coloured backpacker figurines bearing the message ). When you consider this room is bigger than an apartment I once rented in Hong Kong, it's great value. Though prices fall as the number of stairs you need to climb rises. They really are keen to please here (the hotel's business card states they are 'Working hard to be in Lonely Planet') and apart from free breakfast and Internet. We'll pick you up from the airport, train or bus stations if you book ahead by email and stay over three nights, we'll pay a half of fee from the airport to get to our hotel

You don't have to go far for a taste of 'real' Vietnam. Two street side restaurants operate from a few mets up the street serving delicious Vietnamese standards to punters scattered along pavements nearby. For a drink, the cool Half Man and Half Noodle bar deserves your business for the name alone. It's in Dao Duy Tu street, behind the hotel.
